Stefan Sagmeister talk on design and happiness

I went to a talk by Stefan Sagmeister that was really interesting. I particularly liked the idea of taking 1 year off every now and then to get things in perspective. That would be AMAZING! He also showed us a preview of a video about happiness that was really good, although based on his own pursuit of happiness, rather than societies.

Happiness book

The first draft of the book I made about happiness can be found at http://www.pandorataylor.co.uk/book/happy_book.pdf. This has been quite a tricky last minute project but an enjoyable one. The hardest part was making sure it wasn't too naff! There are also alot of blank pages but thats as some of the things in the book don't work virtually (e.g. actual chocolate, smelly stickers etc)

Sentiment analysis

I've been really interested in sentiment analysis lately and what it can tell you.

Sentiment analysis is a process that aims to determine the feelings of the speaker/writer in regard to a certain topic. There is such a wealth of information held in these databases I wondered whether I could use it for research into the general temperament of people.

Some great research can be found at twittermood.s3.amazonaws.com/images/poster.pdf

Daniel Brown, artist and programmer

Daniel Brown is a designer, programmer and artist whose work I admire for its technical and creative playful exploration. Alongside Nick Knight (photography) and Nick Ryan (audio) they have created an interactive project aimed at exploring the phenomenon of Synaesthesia. The artwork responds to mouse movements, burning out parts of the image as it is scrolled over, with sounds triggered corresponding to the texture of the image.

Raindrop melody maker

Japanese music group ‘Lullotone’ create what they refer to as ‘pyjama pop’. Although they are known for their music, they do not consider this to be their only artistic pursuit. They are people who ‘make stuff’ whether it be music, design, animation or games. To add to this, they also host a weekly childrens television show in Japan where they make things (similar to ‘art attack’). I particularly like their Raindrop Melody Maker for its simplistic and playful interface. Lullotone suggest their (young) audience use the game to create simple songs about raindrops

We feel fine

We Feel Fine is an online project by Jonathan Harris & Sep Kamvar that collects human feelings. Their software searches blog entries for phrases such as “I feel” and “I am feeling”, and records the full sentence, classifies it and enters it into a database. The information is then presented as infographics or visuals which can be searched and sorted.
