Progress with the Hexaflexagon

Optical illusions

Whilst playing with the idea of scanimations I noticed that the images work quite well together as overlaid images. I really like the style of image used as Stefan Sagmeister's Made you look cover as can be found at:
http://www.dangoland.com/sagmeister/p2b.html

This is something I may progress a bit further down the line

Hexaflexagon

Whilst browsing the internet I came across some really interesting origami that I feel holds relevance to the text of Borges. See: http://www.crunchgear.com/2009/02/19/are-you-bored-enough-to-play-with-paper/

Progress with projects

I've found it very difficult to progress my projects this week. I feel like I've got a few too many directions to explore and discussion with other people is only resulting in giving me more options to follow and more confusion!

I've decided to take a step back for now and just get on with some reading!

Record Player

I've purchased a cheap record player to turn into a Zoetrope. Hopefully I'll have this done before the end of the course! It has no base, and doesn't actually work at the moment so it may be a little difficult!

Stop motion and hand made letters

In between creating the Zoetrope and other projects I've been working on some 3d card letters for a stop motion piece involving the words 'Don't Panic' from the Hitchhikers Guide to The Galaxy. However the finish of the letters isn't that successful and I have this nagging feeling that I should have created them to a much larger scale. When I accidentally squashed my letter 'i' I decided to shelve the project for the time being.

Ideas for progression

I've spent some time considering ways to develop my ideas and I find that I seem to keep being drawn to tricks of the mind, visual illusions and hand made crafty things which is completely different to where I'd normally take things. However because of this, I feel I've become alot more hands on and in touch with the process rather than overly focused on the outcome.

Some things of visual interest:

I would definitely like to progress the idea of a Phonographantasmascope (record player and video camera animation) as for some reason its over complication appeals to me, as well as its beauty and link with Zoetropes, however I realise this may be some challenge so will perhaps come back to this at a later date.

Developing ideas - Zoetrope

In response to the brief I've decided to develop the Zoetrope idea. I feel that we can interpret the text in alternative ways and a Zoetrope would make for an interesting 'Circular book'. Fortunately we have a record player at home so I was able to test out the concept without too much complication. I also decided to incorporate the collage man as he invokes emotions I feel appropriate to 'The Library', which I sense is a dark and nonsensical place.

Some beautiful and inspiring Zoetrope:

http://www.creativereview.co.uk/cr-blog/2009/february/the-sony-bravia-zoetrope

I find Zoetropes to have a beautiful old movie feel. Its surprising how technology has moved on yet a Zoetrope seems more magical in a way.

Through my research I came across some really interesting research into the history of Zoetropes. Originally they were considered to be “Daedalum” or Wheel of the devil; (http://vl203.wordpress.com/2010/11/05/zoetrope-or-wheel-of-the-devil/, http://animationhistory.blogspot.com/2006/05/zoetrope.html) and was renamed to mean 'wheel of life'. Either phrase is loaded with religious meaning that I feel appropriate to The Library and specifically the Circular book.

Newspaper challenge

Okay, so somehow I only had a Financial Times to work with. I guess if the point in this is to truly challenge me then this most definitely fits the bill!

The newspaper headline was:
Top-Earner Pension pots face tax-blow

Result:

The anagrams alone were very difficult but gave me a wealth of choice for visuals. Unfortunately, the paper itself held very few visuals so it took some consideration as to how to create the images. The photocopier was seriously overused. Small things were blown up, and colour and contrast settings were played with a great deal.

Although I could be happier with the result, I think I've really challenged myself through it. It definitely appealed to the 'must solve this problem' part of my personality which was discussed in class during week 2.

Visual thinking/process visualisation workshop

This class was a bit different from what I'm used to. We all bought in ephemera to put together. I am definitely more comfortable on a computer so this was entirely new to me. We randomly selected words as a starting point for creation. My word was 'chance'. I found this quite difficult as I wasn't really sure where to start - I had bought in too much really and it would have worked better had I of only bought in a few chosen pieces.

However I can see there are ways to improve this and am planning on spending some time building upon it and dividing into separate mini projects as it became clear that there is a lot going on within it. The general idea behind the page is related to the hadron accelerator being a game of chance whilst also attempting to link the idea with 'The Library'.

Effects from photocopying:

I'm also interested in another 'challenge', suggested by Malcolm. The challenge is that you take today's newspaper and make an anagram from the frontpage headline. You then have to style up the page using ONLY that newspaper. I assume I'm also allowed scissors, glue, a photocopier and white paper.

The Library of Babel, by Jorge Louis Borges

My first read through of the text was a struggle and so my initial reaction was 'needs styling up, graphics and emphasis of key points' – this angle was for purely selfish reasons – I felt it was hard to read and needed some simplification for myself! However as the request wasn't to style up the text but to find a theme of interest and follow I resisted from doing the obvious.

An initial thought that came to mind was to explore other authors that I find easier to read. I like the lighthearted Sci Fi of Douglas Adams and found a nice quote in response to Borges enquiry into the meaning of the universe:

Although I love this quote, I felt that this wasn't necessarily the best 'visual' response so continued thinking about themes from the text.

Mathematics in Art
I found patterns and mathematics introduced through the text quite interesting. The matter of infinity is a constant theme. Through discussion with friends, it was suggested that perhaps all the text in the library equates to Pi with a base of 25? Obviously my friends are far more intelligent than I. Some visuals I found of interest whilst considering mathematics and geometry in art:

This visual from Graphis Diagram (1974) I find very interesting. The 'illusion' of infinity and display as an infographic links my previous study with my current module. The matter of sensory illusion is something I would like to consider further.

The traditional infinity sign (http://www.shutterstock.com/pic.mhtml?id=25666747/) could be another route however is almost a little obvious.

I also came across some beautiful work by artist Emma Kunz http://www.emma-kunz-zentrum.ch/e/index_e.html?#galerie which I found to be both soothing and complex.
Emma Kunz was also a 'healer' and researcher and used her art as a method to display her research.

I also spent some considering how the circular book could be visualised. Initially I felt this could work well as shaped paper (see http://www.shelterpop.com/2010/06/25/what-to-do-with-old-books/) however this was purely for visual interest and I soon changed my mind as to how to reflect the book.

As the book reflects 'infinity', it could take a different from than a traditional book. The use of a Zoetrope could potentially indicate infinity.

The whole process has led to some deep conversations with friends. A quote of my boyfriends that I felt held some interest:
“the universe is expanding at such a rate that no matter how fast you go, you are always moving farther aware from the edge”

What is my practice?

...the first question posed to us during our first class for this module. Although this should be simple to answer, it definitely wasn't! My job title and responsibilities have changed over the summer and now has much more of a focus on 'social media'. I am now an 'E-Marketing Team Leader'. I'm not particularly enthralled with the change in job title - the shift from designer to marketeer is not really how I see myself, however it is only a title and ultimately I still 'design'.

With that in mind, my response to the question is that I am a 'problem solver' - it is my responsibility to come up with new media design solutions (however print design is still within the job description). Essentially I feel that through the natural progression of my career, I am slowly moving farther away from 'hands-on' creativity, however ideas are ultimately what my job is about.

A suggestion from Rob to consider aspects of social design through such things as The Royal Society of Arts project briefs might help me feel I can put some value back into my design.

Somethings to consider for future: www.thersa.org/projects/design/student-design-awards/briefs

This led to a discussion as to whether I am a reactive or proactive problem solver, to which I believe I am both.

What are the things that matter to me in my practice?

It is definitely a common reaction for me to try to make sense of something through design as was indicated through my studies in 'Introduction to Graphic Arts'

I thought I'd take this opportunity to list (most of) the sites and web pages I've found of interest. I have found all of them interesting reads, however I'm aware I need to focus my research to evolve my idea further.

Presentation feedback

General feedback for my presentation was positive although there is definitely alot of room for improvement. The actual slides were a hit but nerves got the better of me and I sped through the presentation and let my nerves get the better of me!

The feedback collated from the post its:

Negatives
Look at more people
Voice pitch
Too much self questioning - don't really understand that piece of advice as we were advised at this stage that it was an idea in progress, therefore stating that I still had some areas to investigate was appropriate
Slightly unclear of service
Speak up!
A bit nervous
Slow down
Draw on own experiences
Didn't say what makes the business better than competition

Positives
Snazzy and professional power point
Nice powerpoint
Simple bullet points
Less is more as your powerpoint 'Awesome'
Concise
Very informative
Good research
Good introduction to self
Very interesting solution to problem

The majority of my negatives were a reflection of my nerves - even the ones that didn't seem to be! for instance I have considered my own experiences in relation to this project and how I differ from the competition, but nerves made it so I only focused on the key points.

In terms of explaining my ideas I have always felt it easier to show rather than describe something. For my final presentation I will design an example web page to illustrate my idea more fully. I believe this will prompt me to remember key aspects of my business idea as I certainly can visualise it, but struggle with putting the idea across. I will also include some discussion on Strategy. As there will be no business premises some discussion on placing my business on Social networks will be a key aspect of my business.

One of the issues I have been struggling with is who my customers are? Are they clients? Freelancers? both. Ultimately I think this would change with the progression of the business. Initially the collaboration would be a small tight knit crew, but potentially it could evolve that I would be providing a service for freelancers. I need to ensure I keep my idea quite focused for now

Attempt at an Elevator pitch for my business idea

I’m Pandora. I have 8 years experience in Media Design and Development. I’ve gained my experience through design agencies, freelance projects and more recently as part of a marketing team for a large organisation.
Through my experience and through meeting other freelancers I’ve noticed that there are lots of benefits of working with a freelancer. They are often motivated, independent self starters and there are also financial benefits, but there is also quite a high level of risk. If the freelancer is sick or on holiday there is no-one to cover the workload, they might not have the entire range of skills the client needs.
My proposal of a collaboration of freelancers eliminates the risks and adds more to the benefits.
There is a wider network of support and an opportunity to bounce ideas off each other.
Collaboration allows for experience and knowledge to be shared to produce an effect that is greater than the sum of its parts. The synergy provides experience in branding, design, copywriting, photography, web design and development and social media.
This combined product meets the needs of today’s Y generation. They tend to be more web literate and in touch with today’s technology, and quite likely to take advantage of the opportunity to reinvent themselves during the recession. Freelancers within the collaboration fit into that category themselves and understand what appeals to the market.
The costs of working collaboratively are split between us – this allows us to advertise our skills more effectively and gain better deals on purchases.
Our support network and lower overheads allow us to provide our services at a lower cost than most of our competitors, without affecting the quality.

Tuesday 2 March 2010

Attempt 1: Week 5 presentation questions

> description of the idea – what is this enterprise doing?
A collaboration of freelancers with a wide range of skills working together for clients with a range of requirements.
Main focus would be a website (shop front) with features on each of the freelancers, their skills and practise.
Freelancers would pool their resources for marketing. Opportunity for selling everyone’s skills, working together on larger projects, features of other stuff such as artwork that can be purchased. Opportunity to compete in the market place with design/digital agencies. Relatively low overheads.
Potential to grow into a large collaboration where clients can source a freelancer directly rather than go through an agency – this would have to work in a different manner than the initial proposal as it would work more like a network.
Main target customers would be other start up companies - Y generation – this generation is fairly clued up and the lower cost of a freelancer would mean that other start ups would find us appealing. Obviously not all of these start ups will be successful and evolve to become long term clients however some could grow and keep us in mind in future.

> your personal motivation and commitment to it – why is it worth doing?
From a personal perspective, I have often considered going freelance but have been concerned about job security, loneliness and a bit of a basic fear of the unknown.
What appeals to me about going freelance is the sense of independence, job ownership and owning my own destiny.
The freelance collaboration would resolve some of the fear of going freelance whilst maintaining much of the independence. The freelancers involved could retain much of their independence, they could have their own designs on their profiles, and we could meet up regularly to discuss marketing which in turn would alleviate loneliness. The web provides a multitude of ways to keep in touch as well, msn, skype etc - in future this could even be built into the website. In terms of job security, by sharing resources we would be able to win larger contracts and by pooling resources for marketing we could reach farther than if we did independently.

> the opportunity that exists to set up this enterprise – why is it worth doing?
By setting up this collaboration, there will be benefits for both client and freelancer. The client would have the benefit of a number of creatives being able to support each other – if the freelancer falls ill, another can complete the job. If the client requires work done to tighter timescales, perhaps the freelancer can call on one of their colleagues to work with them.

> what are the issues that you need to consider when setting this up?
Who would be our competition
How to get everyone to contribute equally to the overheads of the website/joint marketing/joint running
How to split the profits
What areas to market ourself to

> where are you going to look/go for information?

Research into the market

I've spent a bit of time over the weekend trawling the internet to get a better understanding of whats already out there.

One website, FreelanceAdvisor.co.uk seems interesting. The website contains advice for freelancers and gives its users the opportunity to work collaboratively through the network. The site seems really useful - lots of info and jobs advertised. It is different from my idea however as it is an 'open' site where any freelancers can join and use the facilities. Initially I would like my business to consist of a small number of freelancers where we all can work together and know each other. I could see this evolving in the future in to becoming a much more open network of freelancers. There are definitely a number of details I need to understand better as I can definitely foresee some future problems. How would I determine who is within the community? Would there be competition between each other for work? Who are my customers? Are they businesses? Freelancers? Or both?

FreelanceAdvisor.co.uk appears to work quite closely with freelancesupermarket.com which works more specifically as a recruitment agency for freelancers. Another interesting site, however again, I feel my business idea is far more contained than this. To someone that came across my site, I would want to give the impression of a close knit team of people that they could potentially work with - I would want my business to contain some of the values of a traditional agency but without the overheads.

bristolcreatives.co.uk, has a Creative Directory, so that members of the site can promote themselves or find others within their field. Something like this (although on a far smaller scale)is what I imagined would be included within my freelance collaboration.

Week 2: Workshop with Percy Emmett

This week we had a really interesting workshop with business 'starter' Percy Emmett. Percy has worked in a number of different creative roles and has set up a number of different businesses. He enjoys setting up businesses but not necessarily running them. During the class we performed a range of different activities that allowed us to dissect our ideas and see where the holes were. We worked in teams on one members idea, so I will now try to apply these same questions to my own idea (that has a billion holes in it!)

What are the values/benefits of my business idea?
Lower costs than a design agency
Working directly with the client
A range of people able to pick up the job should 1 person not be able to complete
Clients knowing more about the creative that is doing the work
Opportunity to win larger clients
Opportunity to have a larger online presence / collaborative marketing of services
Freelancers can still retain some sense of identity - design in accordance with their own values and beliefs

What do I like/admire about my idea?
From a personal perspective I would have to say that 'a sense of identity' and collaboratively working with other creatives is what I most like about my idea. I think going freelance is often quite a scary prospect for many, and this could resolve some of the factors.

Why should people care?
My idea could provide a more affordable service, and more security that the job could be done. It could allow freelancers to work on larger projects to tighter timescales.

5 words that represent my values
I am considering this in terms of my businesses potential identity:
Fun
Affordable
Friendly
Community
Supportive

In 3 years time... (including additions in blue from team members 01/03/10)

What does it make redundant?
Recruitment agencies
Hierarchical structures
Job security
Client uncertainty as to what type of agency to use.
Large specialist agencies.

What does it retrieve?
Independence
Overheads
A sense of belonging for all creatives.
Creatives being involved with work outside of their normal area.

What does it enhance?
Relationships between designers & clients
Bigger contracts
Community spirit within the work area.
Sense of ownership among creatives.
More creative atmosphere in which to work.

What does it become when flipped on its head?
Everyone becomes freelance
Competition amongst each other
Business having to trawl through hundreds of designers in order to pick one
Client unsure of who is handling the job.
Increase in freelance prices as individuals value themselves more than others.
jobs lost due to lack of organisation.

Further consideration of business idea

I've tried to consider some more detailed aspects of setting myself up as a freelancer:

The services I would hope to offer would involve graphic design, web design, development, social networking, e-marketing, photography, illustration, animation, branding & identity - although I wouldn't be able to provide all of these skills, I do have a number of freelance contacts that I could pass work on to. Both parties would benefit - myself through being able to provide a larger range of services, and whom I passed the work onto. Through this I would hope that we could provide more security to the client, e.g. ability to do a number of things, meet tighter timescales, larger range of skills and enable myself to win bigger contracts.

It would be nice if I could somehow integrate my practise into my business idea - 'play'. As my business 'front' would be online, I could possibly integrate the 'play' concept into the brand and identity of the business.

If I were to evolve the idea into a collaboration of freelancers, I could include features on each freelancers practise and inspiration. This could allow for clients to make better informed decisions about who they choose to work with than if they went through a recruitment agency.

My concern for this idea at present is that it seems to be evolving into something else. Initially I was purely concerned with setting myself up as a freelancer. This collaboration idea could result in myself acting as an agency for a number of freelancers? Is that where I would like to go?

I have come across a number of websites discussing the benefits of freelance collaboration including http://www.bytestart.co.uk/content/contractors/contractor-guides/collaborative-freelancing.shtml. It suggests that collaboratively working is an emerging trend amongst freelancers and offers benefits for both freelancers and business. I need to do more research into whats already out there.

Week 1: Creative Enterprise, Adrienne Noonan, Bill Cain

First class of a new semester!

Initially we went over everyone's ideas for enterprise. Some really interesting ideas - it became clear that I hadn't put much thought into mine yet. I hadn't really considered who would be my target market.

Since the class I have considered whom I would aim for my clients to be - the broad categories of entertainment, arts, hospitality and leisure seems to allow for alot of scope and is also an area I have some experience in - this could include smaller companies such as a local wine bar, and potentially evolve to include larger clients. Whilst looking through 'The Guide to Creative Bristol' that was given to us during our first class, it became clear that agencies and freelancers target themselves in quite different ways. Some target themselves quite broadly whilst others are quite specialised such as Enable in Bristol who work with ethical clients.

The article, Starting your own business: The new young entrepreneurs (http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2009/dec/12/starting-your-own-business) got me thinking that perhaps being a freelancer (with lower prices and overheads) could put me in a good position to work with some 'new young entrepreneurs'. The freelance work I have worked on in the past has been friends or friends of friends asking me to work with them at the launch of their business. This could be one of my targets - with the possibility of growing with my clients as they do. It would also allow me to win more exciting briefs - launching a companies identity.

I watched recently a documentary entitled 'The Virtual Revolution' on BBC four. It discussed social networking, and the 'web generation'. Although at the time I watched it purely out of curiosity, it struck me as possibly having some impact on the type of business I would like to create. My website should reflect the future entrepreneurs and web generation somehow.

Considering Creative Enterprise

During the break between modules I considered my enterprise idea for the upcoming module: a local social networking concept for creative types. Content on the site would include other contacts within the industry, games, downloads, advice, a facility for employers to find out about freelance designers etc. One of my major concerns with this idea, was that I wasn't aware of what was already out there, and would I really want to spend my career managing 1 website? I quickly decided that it would make more sense to apply the course to something I would more likely do - to set myself up as a freelancer. This is something I have considered in the past, but haven't had much time to consider. I do have a few contacts that I work for from time to time, but more often than not, my full-time job and studies have got in the way of making a real go of this.

Tuesday 16 February 2010

Introduction to Graphic Arts: Review

So... I've finished my first semester on the course. Its been challenging but interesting and I now have a clearer idea of my practise and how to progress it forward. I also have a clearer idea of the areas I need to improve:
Research - my knowledge of historical precedents and contemporary debates is limited, although much improved from where I was at the beginning of the course
Solving problems - quite often I have found that I have got 'stuck' on an idea. I think this has more to do with anxiety about getting all the work done than my natural style of working. At times I tend to panic and spend a huge amount of time continuing down a path which may not necessarily be the right direction. Taking a step back would allow me to look at the bigger picture.

Its not all bad though! My assessment showed that my work demonstrates a high level of exploration, originality, curiousity and ambition. Of all the criteria, this pleases me the most, as I feel it reflects my enthusiasm.

Designs for Manifesto

I have evolved 2 slightly different styles for my manifesto. The one I would progress is the one of the right as I feel I could develop this style further into a motion piece. The style of writing would be euphoric and dreamy with background music to reflect this.

Consideration for further development of Manifesto

Although I probably won't have the opportunity to progress this manifesto any further during this module, I have had some ideas as to how to progress it in future - if I have the time I will do this as a project outside the module as I feel it is a bit of a fun project. I would like to evolve it as a moving presentation so I can incorporate some additional content and show the idea building and developing. The project would have a voice over the top discussion my list of opportunities further.

Progress on Manifesto

Although previously I had begun to work on a book for my manifesto, this has again changed - I have now decided to work on something similar, in a mind mapping kind of style. The idea is reflective of our first project whereby I illustrate where each of my list of opportunities stems from. This is meant to indicate the benefits to myself or a graphic designer with similar values. During the process I also considered displaying my manifesto as a Venn diagram using the same principles. I could still change my mind!

Monday 4 January 2010

Consideration for design of manifesto

I have spent (or wasted) a huge amount of time considering the best way to display my manifesto and have finally come to the decision that I will present it in a very simple style, similar to a childs book. I think that this links in with my original 'its okay to be childish' statement and allows for me to incorporate the things that I tend to be drawn to visually - simple, bright and fun. I only wish I had had made this decision earlier as time is swiftly running out!
